The São Paulo Meeting 2024

Climate Change - the challenge of global cooperation for urban adaptation

Date: November 4 - 8, 2024

Venues: Mackenzie Presbyterian University and São Paulo City Hall

The São Paulo (SP) Meeting 2024: The Challenge of Global Cooperation for Urban Adaptation is an international conference aimed at facilitating transdisciplinary discussions regarding the impact of climate change on cities and the associated challenges of urban adaptation. As scientists sound the alarm about the urgent need to meet the Paris goals amidst escalating climate crises, such as the devastating flooding in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in May 2024, this meeting will delve into the repercussions of climate change effects on urban environments. It will provide a platform for actors from various sectors to exchange national and international insights that can enhance Brazilian cities' technical and adaptive governance capabilities.
The German-Brazilian initiative BmBF Klimapolis, the Cities, the Infrastructure and Adaptation to Climate Change network CIAMClima (Mackpesquisa/CNPq), and the Brazilian Institute of Science and Technology - INCT Klimapolis are extending invitations to researchers from Brazil, Germany, the United Kingdom, India, South Africa, and Portugal, as well as professionals from public administration, private enterprises, and civil society to attend the SP Meeting 2024. This collaborative effort addresses crucial issues for steering Brazilian cities towards sustainable development.
During the event, discussions will revolve around topics such as urban drainage systems, water management, air pollution, urban well-being, and health in an interdisciplinary manner. The program seeks to foster interactions among scientists, governmental bodies, and local communities to confront the challenges posed by climate change.
Specifically, on November 4th and 5th, during the III Workshop on Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems the focus will be on sustainable urban drainage, emphasizing transdisciplinary dialogues and sharing experiences among administrators, scholars, and civil society in collaboration with the Alliance for Water Sensitive Design & Planning.
Subsequently, on November 6th and 7th, the Multilevel Cooperation for Global Adaptation Workshop will address climate governance topics, highlighting practical experiments, community engagement initiatives, and knowledge exchange of CIAMClima with international projects such as the german-brazilian BmBF Klimapolis and the Brazilian Institute of Science and Technology - INCT Klimapolis. The concluding day, November 8th, will host deliberations with the São Paulo City Hall and INCT Klimapolis representatives and a final conference on the complexities of multilevel governance in city adaptation.
The SP Meeting is a public event funded by the Mackenzie Fund for Research and Innovation (Mackpesquisa), the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BmBF). The event is supported by the University of São Paulo (USP), Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), and the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) and endorsed by various departments of the São Paulo City Hall, including the Secretariat of Climate, Secretariat of Urban Infrastructure, Secretariat of Subprefectures, Secretariat of Green and Environment, and the Council of Architecture and Urbanism of São Paulo.
The sessions will be in English and Portuguese, with simultaneous translation available. Interested participants can register via the event website or using the provided QR code until October 25, 2024.
